I led the end-to-end design of TD’s first stock-lending product, across the mobile app and WebBroker, stepping in as acting lead mid-project. It was the whole experience: discovering the feature, enrolling, managing what’s on loan, and tracking the income it earns.

The hard part was never the mechanics, it was trust: many investors had been told stock lending is how hedge funds short the companies they believe in. So I designed for control instead of speed, giving people a clear way to choose what to lend, set limits, and recall shares anytime, with plain-language education built into the moments that mattered. The result welcomed confident and cautious investors alike, and the same trust-first approach carried over to WebBroker.

Stock Lending onboarding: a plain-language intro explaining that enrolling makes your shares available to borrowers, like renting out your stocks for extra monthly income.
Stock Lending, On loan tab: shares out on loan with monthly estimated earnings and recall status per security.
Stock Lending, Earnings tab: monthly payouts accruing, with a running total earned.
What shipped Understand the program in plain language, stay in control of what's on loan, then watch the income accrue.

Outcomes

What shipped, and what it moved.

  • 1st retail stock-lending product at TD, shipped end-to-end January 2026
  • 3 of 3 user types served by the hybrid model where the mandate served one
  • 2 platforms WebBroker adopted the trust patterns; the work won a Legendary Award

Perspectives

Why this project is worth your time, depending on what you came to evaluate.

Product leadership

I turned a late leadership mandate into a better product without ever framing it as pushback.

The mandate called for instant enrollment only. I proposed hybrid enrollment, supporting different user types instead of optimizing for one, and positioned it as a conversion maximizer so the recommendation could travel up without me in the room. The hybrid model is what shipped.

Design

I designed for control instead of enrollment, because trust was the real barrier.

Many investors had been told stock lending is how hedge funds short the companies they believe in. So the experience runs on agency: choose what to lend, set limits, recall shares anytime, with plain-language education placed at the moments people actually hesitate.

Engineering

One lending model had to stay coherent across a six-stage arc and two platforms.

The shipped experience runs from discovery inside the holdings screen to per-security earnings in the trading flow, with defined management states: on loan, recalling, auto-recalling. WebBroker adopted the same trust patterns, so both platforms describe lending the same way.
